Scorpiops validus (formerly Euscorpiops validus) is a species of scorpion in the family Scorpiopidae. Commonly referred to as the Validus Bush Scorpion or Yunnan Rock Scorpion, it is native to the Yunnan Province of southern China. 

 

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: They are medium-sized scorpions, typically reaching a total length of 50.0–59.8 mm. Their coloration is generally dark brown, with dark red-brown tergites.
  • Distinctive Features: The name validus (Latin for "strong" or "stout") refers to its robust appearance, particularly its remarkably thick and strong chelae (pincers).
  • Habitat: In the wild, they are terrestrial scorpions found in the humid, varied terrains of Yunnan. 

     

Care and Captivity

In the exotic pet hobby, they are considered a beginner-friendly species. 

 

  • Environment: They require a terrestrial setup with a shallow layer of substrate (approx. 6cm) and a humid environment (70–80% humidity).
  • Temperature: They thrive at temperatures between 24–28°C, though some keepers maintain them at room temperature.
  • Enclosure: Providing cork bark hides or slate pieces is recommended to mimic their natural rocky environment.
  • Availability: They are occasionally available through specialist retailers like The Spider Shop or Spider Shoppe, often priced around £25.00 for sub-adults.
