Holothele longipes, commonly known as the Trinidad Pink tarantula (and formerly known as Holothele sanguiniceps), is a vibrant dwarf species from Trinidad, Tobago, and Venezuela. It is highly regarded in the hobby for its striking adult coloration, featuring metallic blue-black legs and a bright orange or pinkish carapace.

Characteristics

  • Size: A true dwarf tarantula, adults typically reach a leg span of 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches).
  • Temperament: Generally docile and suitable for beginners, though they are extremely fast and skittish. They would rather flee than act defensively.
  • Growth & Lifespan: They have a fast growth rate. Females typically live 5–10 years, while males live approximately 2 years.
  • Webbing: Like many members of the Holothele and Neoholothele genera, they are prolific webbers, often covering their entire enclosure in intricate silk tunnels.

Care Requirements

  • Environment: They are terrestrial and opportunistic burrowers. A small enclosure (e.g., 30x30x30cm) with 3–4 inches of substrate (coco fibre/peat moss mix) is ideal to allow for tunnelling.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives at temperatures between 24–28°C (75–82°F) and high humidity of 75–85%. Maintaining damp substrate in one corner is recommended to support these levels.
  • Social Behaviour: While mostly solitary, some keepers have successfully raised them communally with low rates of cannibalism, provided they are well-fed and have ample space.
