The Neoholothele incei (Gold), or the Trinidad Gold Tarantula, is a popular dwarf tarantula species known for its vibrant golden coloration and enthusiastic webbing. It is an easy-to-care-for New World species, suitable for beginner keepers.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: This color form is a genetic variation of the standard "olive" N. incei and is due to a recessive gene. The carapace becomes a beautiful, metallic gold color as the tarantula matures.
  • Size: A dwarf species, it reaches a modest leg span of around 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches), with females being slightly larger than males.
  • Lifespan: Females can live up to 7–10 years, while males have a shorter lifespan of approximately 2–3 years.
  • Temperament: They are generally considered skittish and fast, preferring to flee into their extensive web systems or burrows when disturbed rather than being defensive. They do not possess urticating hairs.
  • Activity: They are prolific webbers, often filling their entire enclosure with intricate silk tunnels. Unlike many tarantulas, they can often be seen outside their webs during the day, making them an engaging display species.

Care and Husbandry

  • Habitat: As a terrestrial, fossorial (burrowing) species, they require a terrestrial setup with several inches of substrate (at least 3 inches) to allow for digging, as well as anchor points like cork bark or plastic foliage for their heavy webbing.
  • Temperature: Ideal temperatures are between 23°C and 28°C (74–82°F).
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity levels of 60–80% are recommended. This can be achieved by keeping a corner of the substrate moist, though the overall enclosure should be reasonably dry. A shallow water dish should also be provided.
  • Diet: They are good eaters and will readily take appropriately sized prey such as crickets, roaches, and mealworms.
  • Communal KeepingN. incei is one of the few tarantula species that can be housed communally, a unique trait in the hobby. This requires sufficient space, numerous hiding places, and careful observation, as success can vary and cannibalism is possible if underfed.
