Heteroscodra maculata, commonly known as the Togo Starburst Baboon or Ornamental Baboon, is an Old World arboreal tarantula native to West Africa, primarily found in Togo and Ghana. It is highly regarded for its striking chalk-white and mottled grey-black coloration, as well as its unique stocky build for an arboreal species.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Adults feature a prominent "starburst" pattern on the carapace and intricate black-to-grey mottling on the abdomen. They possess notably thick rear legs, which distinguishes them from similar species like Stomatopelma calceatum.
- Size: They typically reach a diagonal leg span of 13 cm (approx. 5 inches).
- Temperament: Known for being extremely fast, defensive, and shy. They are not prone to "warning" and may bite readily if disturbed.
- Venom: As an Old World species, they lack urticating hairs but possess medically significant venom. Their bite is reported to be very painful.
Care and Husbandry
Due to its speed and potent venom, this species is strictly recommended for advanced keepers.
- Enclosure: A vertically oriented (arboreal) setup is required for adults. Slings often exhibit semi-terrestrial behavior and may burrow into substrate.
- Environment:
- Temperature: Ideally maintained between 24–28°C (75–82°F).
- Humidity: High humidity levels of 65–75% are recommended, achieved through regular misting and providing a water bowl.
- Behaviour: They are copious webbers, often constructing dense silken retreats and "rooms" within their enclosure, typically using cork bark or vertical decor for support.
- Diet: They have a strong feeding response and consume standard feeder insects such as crickets, locusts, and cockroaches.
Lifespan
- Females: Can live up to 15 years or more.
- Males: Significantly shorter lifespan, maturing in 1–2 years and living only 3 to 4 years in total.
