Rhombodera kirbyi, commonly known as the Timor Shield Mantis, is a large species of praying mantis endemic to the island of Timor. It is highly regarded by hobbyists for its impressive size, fierce hunting style, and iconic "shield" on its neck.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: Adults are typically leafy green or brown, though some individuals show hints of yellow, orange, or even pink. Their defining feature is a wide, leaf-like pronotum (the "shield") that aids in camouflage among tropical foliage.
Size: This is a robust species. Females are significantly larger and heavier, reaching up to 10–12.5 cm, while males usually range between 8–10 cm.
Behaviour: They are active, dynamic hunters that patrol their territory rather than remaining motionless for long periods. While they can be shy and easily startled, they are generally considered hardy and suitable for beginners.

Care and Husbandry

Because they originate from the humid tropical forests of Indonesia and Malaysia, they require specific environmental conditions to thrive: [1, 2]

Temperature: Maintain a daytime range of 24–28°C.
Humidity: Keep humidity between 60–85% to support healthy molting. Regular fine misting is recommended.
Housing: A tall enclosure (at least 30x30x40 cm) is essential to provide enough vertical space for the mantis to hang and molt successfully.
Diet: They have massive appetites and will eat almost any live food they can grab, including flies, moths, roaches, and locusts.
