The Thai Red Dragon Centipede (Scolopendra dehaani) is a large, highly aggressive, and venomous tropical centipede native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Vietnam. It is a popular but challenging species in the exotic pet trade, known for its striking red-brown exoskeleton and its reputation as a "monster" among hobbyists due to its size and defensive temperament.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: They can reach lengths of 20–30 cm (approx. 8–12 inches), making them one of the largest centipede species globally.
  • Appearance: Typically features a deep brown-red body with bright red legs and antennae.
  • Venom: Possesses potent venom delivered via forcipules (modified front legs). Bites cause intense, burning pain that can last for days, accompanied by significant swelling. While rarely fatal to healthy adults, the pain is often described as feeling like a "hot nail being driven through the bone".
  • Behaviour: This is a fast, nervous, and aggressive predator that preys on insects, spiders, and even small vertebrates like mice, frogs, and lizards.

Care in Captivity
