The "Thai Giant Centipede" usually refers to the Scolopendra dehaani, a large, aggressive, and highly venomous centipede native to Thailand and Southeast Asia. It is one of the most widely kept species in the exotic pet hobby but is strictly for experienced keepers due to its speed and potent bite.

Key Characteristics

  • Size: They typically grow to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) in length, though exceptional specimens can reach up to 10–12 inches (25–30 cm).
  • Appearance: Their bodies are often reddish-brown or orange with contrasting yellow or red legs. They are frequently sold under names like the "Thai Cherry Red" or "Thai Red Dragon".
  • Venom: While rarely fatal to healthy adults, their bite is described as excruciatingly painful, often causing severe swelling, nausea, and sometimes cardiac arrhythmia.
  • Diet: They are voracious predators that feed on large insects, arachnids, and even small vertebrates like mice, frogs, and lizards.

In the Wild & Captivity

  • Habitat: In Thailand (where they are called dtakhap), they are commonly found in leaf litter, under rocks, or occasionally inside homes and shoes after heavy rain.
  • Behavior: They are famously nervous and aggressive. Unlike many animals that flee, a Thai giant centipede may strike immediately if disturbed.
  • Amphibious Species: Notably, a related species found in Thailand, Scolopendra cataracta, is known to be amphibious, capable of swimming and hunting underwater.
