Scorpiops grandjeani, commonly known as the Thai Flat Rock Scorpion, is a medium-sized forest scorpion native to southern Thailand and northern Peninsular Malaysia. It is highly regarded by enthusiasts for its rugged, prehistoric appearance and generally docile nature.
Physical CharacteristicsAppearance: Typically dark brown to black with a textured, "granulated" carapace and body. Some individuals may show reddish or "burnt" hues under certain lighting.
Size: Adults generally reach a leg span of 6–7 cm. Females can grow up to 10 cm in body length, while males can reach up to 15 cm.
Lifespan: Males typically live for about 33 months, while females live slightly longer at approximately 38 months.
Natural Habitat & BehaviourEnvironment: Found in moist, humid evergreen forests, particularly in rocky areas like limestone cliffs, rock faces, and soil banks.
Microhabitat: They prefer cool, shaded crevices and narrow gaps beneath stones or logs.
Temperament: Generally described as having an "easy" or docile disposition. While they are not considered aggressive, they can be surprisingly fast ("bolting") if startled.
Venom & SafetyPotency: As a member of the Scorpiopidae family, its venom is considered mild and is not medically significant for healthy adults.
Sting Reaction: A sting is typically compared to that of a bee or wasp, causing localized pain, redness, and slight swelling that usually subsides within a few hours.
Captive Care (Pet Suitability)This species is popular in the exotic pet hobby because it is relatively easy to keep and breed in captivity.
Temperature: Maintain between 24–28°C. They can handle standard room temperature well.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–80%) to mimic its tropical forest origin.
Enclosure: A terrestrial setup with plenty of flat rocks or cork bark for hiding is ideal. Keep the substrate moist but not soaking wet.
