Theraphosidae sp. "Roatan" (also commonly referred to as Theraphosinae sp. "Roatan") is an undescribed tarantula species native to the island of Roatan, Honduras. It is widely known in the exotic pet hobby as the Roatan Island Purple due to the striking iridescent purple coloration found on mature males.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: This species exhibits significant sexual dimorphism. Adult males are a "spectacular deep purple" colour overall. Females are stockier and vary from light brown with a dark abdomen to a rich, velvety black immediately after moulting.
  • Size: It is a moderately large species, with adults reaching a leg span of approximately 5 to 6 inches (13–15 cm).
  • Temperament: Generally regarded as calm, docile, and shy. While they possess urticating hairs and can occasionally show a threat posture, they typically prefer to retreat rather than bite.
  • Growth Rate: It is noted for being a fast-growing and hardy species.

Habitat and Care

  • Natural Habitat: They originate from seasonally dry scrub forests on Roatan.
  • Lifestyle: They are primarily burrowers as adults, while spiderlings (slings) are often found under logs and surface debris.
  • Husbandry:
    • Substrate: Requires deep substrate to allow for burrowing, with moisture maintained at the lower levels.
    • Temperature: Ideally kept around 24°C (75°F), though they can tolerate slight variations.
    • Diet: Slings feed on small crickets or roach nymphs; adults can take down large crickets or Dubia roaches once every one to two weeks.
