Physical Characteristics

  • Size: Very small, typically ranging from 22 mm to 36 mm in total length.
  • Appearance: Features a compact, granulated body that is uniformly reddish to yellowish-brown or blackish-brown.
  • Morphology: Characterized by flattish claws and slender metasomas (tails), which allow them to squeeze into narrow crevices. 

 

Biology and Behaviour

  • Reproduction: Notable for being parthenogenetic, meaning females can produce young without mating. They are also viviparous, giving birth to live young.
  • Temperament: Highly non-defensive and rarely sting; they often "play dead" when under extreme stress.
  • Sociality: Known to tolerate communal living, which is rare among many other scorpion species.
  • Venom: Possesses very mild venom that is generally unable to penetrate human skin. 

 

Habitat and Distribution

  • Habitat: Found in subtropical and tropical regions, typically inhabiting decayed wood, leaf litter, and areas under tree bark or stones.
  • Range: Widely distributed across Asia and Oceania, including India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Australia, Papua New Guinea, and various Pacific islands like Fiji and Samoa.
