The Porcellio scaber 'Arenaria' is an attractive and hardy colour morph of the common rough woodlouse or rough slater (Porcellio scaber). The name 'Arenaria' (Latin for sandy) refers to its coloration, which helps it blend into arid or rocky environments.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: This morph features sandy beige to light stone-grey tones, often with a subtle, rough, or tuberculate (bumpy) texture to its exoskeleton, characteristic of all P. scaber.
  • Size: Adults can reach a length of up to 1.7 cm (0.67 inches).
  • Behavior: Like other P. scaber morphs, they are active, bold, and can move quite quickly. They do not roll into a tight ball when threatened, preferring to scurry to a hiding spot. They have a ravenous appetite and are excellent at breaking down organic matter.
  • Origin: The species has a cosmopolitan distribution (found worldwide), but this specific coloration is a captive-bred selection known for its suitability in natural, arid-themed setups.

Husbandry and Care

The 'Arenaria' morph is considered extremely beginner-friendly due to its hardiness and tolerance for a wide range of environmental conditions.

  • Habitat: A well-ventilated enclosure is best. A strong moisture gradient is crucial, with a constantly damp area (e.g., sphagnum moss 'hydration station') and a much drier side where they can escape humidity. This tolerance for drier environments makes them suitable for semi-arid bioactive vivariums.
  • Temperature & Humidity: They are comfortable at standard room temperatures, ideally between 18–26°C (64–79°F). They can handle lower humidity levels than many other isopod species, thriving with a low-to-medium humidity (around 30-40%) on the dry side.
  • Diet: They are primary detritivores with a particular preference for animal matter over plant matter.
    • Main diet: An abundance of decaying hardwood leaf litter and soft, rotting white wood.
    • Supplements: Regular protein sources (fish flakes, dried shrimp, or a commercial mix) should be offered once or twice a week to ensure optimal health.
    • Calcium: A constant supply of calcium (cuttlebone, crushed eggshells, or limestone) is essential for their sturdy exoskeletons.
  • Breeding: They are prolific breeders and will establish a large, active colony quickly when their environmental needs are met.
