The orchid mantis (Hymenopus coronatus) is a species of praying mantis famous for its remarkable resemblance to an orchid flower. Native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, this insect is a master of "aggressive mimicry," where it disguises itself as a harmless flower to lure in pollinating insects like bees and butterflies.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: They are typically white with soft pink or yellow accents, and their four walking legs are shaped like flower petals.
  • Extreme Size Difference: Females grow up to 6–7 cm (about 2.5–3 inches), while males are significantly smaller, reaching only about 2.5 cm (1 inch).
  • Hunting: Unlike many predators that hide to avoid being seen, the orchid mantis wants to be seen by its prey. Studies show it can actually be more attractive to pollinators than real flowers.
  • Lifespan: Females generally live longer, around 8–9 months, while males typically live about 5–6 months

Keeping One as a Pet

The orchid mantis is a popular but "intermediate-level" exotic pet because it has very specific environmental needs.

  • Enclosure: A vertical terrarium (at least 20x20x30 cm) with plenty of ventilation and climbing surfaces is necessary for safe molting.
  • Temperature: They thrive in warm environments between 25°C and 35°C (77°F–95°F).
  • Humidity: High humidity is crucial (60–80%), which is usually maintained by daily misting with water.
  • Diet: They prefer flying insects such as fruit flies for nymphs and house flies or blue bottle flies for adults.
