Eurycantha calcarata, commonly known as the Giant Spiny Stick Insect or Thorny Devil, is a large, heavily armored phasmid native to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: One of the bulkier stick insect species; females typically reach 14–16 cm (5.5–6.3 inches), while males are slightly smaller at 10–14 cm.
- Appearance: They are wingless and resemble bark or rotten wood, with colors ranging from light brown to almost black.
- Defensive Features: Both sexes are covered in small spines. Males possess a significantly large, curved thorn on their hind leg femurs, which they use to pinch threats.
Behavior & Lifespan
- Temperament: Generally docile but can be defensive. Males may raise their hind legs and snap them together if threatened, which can be painful for handlers.
- Activity: Primarily nocturnal; they often hide in groups under bark or in hollows during the day.
- Lifespan: They typically live between 12 and 18 months, though some sources suggest females can live up to 2 years in captivity.
