Necroscia annulipes, commonly known as the Malaysian Jewel Stick Insect due to its vivid colors, is a highly appreciated species of stick insect (phasmid) among enthusiasts, suitable even for beginners.

It is native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Cambodia, Sumatra, and Thailand.

Main Characteristics

  • Appearance: This species features particularly bright colors, with a slender body that is a brilliant green or bluish, and legs that often have yellow or black bands (hence the "annulated" in the name). Adult females reach approximately 8.5–9 cm (3.3–3.5 inches) in length, while males are slightly smaller and more slender (6.5–7 cm or 2.5–2.7 inches).
  • Wings: Both males and females develop wings as adults. Males have functional wings that allow them to fly short distances, often displaying a surprising red or pink color, while females are more robust and move more slowly.
  • Behavior: They are arboreal (tree-dwelling) and nocturnal insects with a calm, non-aggressive temperament. They do not bite or sting.

Husbandry and Care

Keeping Necroscia annulipes is relatively simple and does not require complex conditions.

  • Enclosure: A tall enclosure with good ventilation is needed to allow for adequate molting and movement. The minimum recommended dimensions are approximately 30x30x45 cm (12x12x18 inches) for a pair.
  • Temperature & Humidity: They adapt well to room temperature, ideally between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F). Humidity is important, especially for nymphs, and should be maintained around 70-80% through daily misting, preferably in the evening. The substrate (such as paper towels or peat) should be kept moist.
  • Diet: They are herbivores and feed on a wide variety of leaves. Preferred host plants include:
    • Privet
    • Lilac
    • Olive
    • Bramble (blackberry) and raspberry
    • Jasmine
  • Breeding: The species reproduces sexually, with mating between males and females. The eggs are simply dropped onto the enclosure floor and require careful collection and incubation to prevent damage.
