Bonnetina tanzeri, commonly known as the Michoacán Red Rump tarantula or the Mexican Sunset tarantula, is a captivating New World terrestrial spider endemic to the scrublands of Mexico. Originally described by arachnologist Günter Schmidt in 2012, it is highly sought after by hobbyists for its striking tricolor appearance, manageable size, and generally docile temperament.
Physical Characteristics
Colouration: Possesses dark blue legs with faint "skeleton" striping, a vibrant pink-to-red carapace, and a red-haired abdomen boasting a distinct heart-shaped mirror patch.
Size: It is a semi-dwarf to smaller terrestrial species, maxing out at an adult diagonal leg span of roughly 10 to 12 cm (approx. 4 inches).
Lifespan: Females are long-lived and can reach up to 15–20 years, whereas males typically live between 5 to 7 years.
Husbandry & Care
Habitat: As a terrestrial scrubland species, they require a setup focused on floor space rather than height. Deep substrate should be provided, as they are opportunistic burrowers.
Temperature: They thrive best in a warm climate maintained between 21°C and 28°C.
Humidity: Keeping the humidity around 60% to 70% via an overflowed water dish or occasional light substrate misting is ideal.
Growth Rate: Unlike many other Mexican species, Bonnetina tanzeri features a medium-to-fast growth rate.
Temperament
While some keeping resources note they can occasionally show quick bursts of movement, they are widely considered a docile, beginner-friendly New World species. Their urticating hairs are generally noted to be less irritating than those of more defensive species.
