The Aphonopelma bicoloratum, commonly known as the Mexican Blood Leg or Mexican Beauty, is a slow-growing tarantula highly prized for its vibrant orange legs and docile temperament. Native to the dry forests and scrublands of southwestern Mexico, it is often considered the "Holy Grail" of the Aphonopelma genus due to its striking appearance and gentle nature.
Physical CharacteristicsColouration: Known for a dramatic contrast between its deep black body/carapace and bright orange-to-blood-red leg segments.
Size: A semi-dwarf species that typically reaches an adult leg span of 10–13 cm (4–5 inches).
Growth & Lifespan: Notoriously slow growers; it can take over 5 years to reach 3 inches. Females are long-lived, often reaching 20–30 years, while males live roughly 5–7 years.
Common Confusion: Often mistaken for the Brachypelma boehmei (Mexican Fire Leg), but A. bicoloratum generally has a more uniform orange hue and a more pronounced carapace.
Care & TemperamentTemperament: Famous for being one of the calmest tarantulas in the hobby, making it an excellent choice for beginners. While they possess urticating hairs that can cause itching, they rarely show defensive behaviour.
Enclosure: A terrestrial setup with deep substrate for burrowing is ideal.
Environment: Prefers semi-arid conditions with temperatures between 24–28 degrees C and low humidity (50–60%). A consistent water source should always be provided in a shallow dish.
