Heterometrus spinifer, commonly known as the Malaysian Forest Scorpion or Asian Forest Scorpion, is a large terrestrial arachnid native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. It is popular in the pet hobby due to its impressive size, glossy appearance, and relatively mild venom.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: Adults typically reach lengths of 10–12 cm (3.9–4.7 in), though some specimens can grow up to 15–20 cm.
- Appearance: They feature a shiny black body often with grey-green or bluish reflections. Like other scorpions, they fluoresce bright turquoise under UV light.
- Pincers: They possess highly developed, powerful pincers (pedipalps) used for hunting and defence.
- Venom: While the sting causes localized pain and numbness similar to a bee or wasp sting, it is generally not lethal to humans unless an allergy is present.
Behaviour and Habitat
- Nocturnal: They are active at night and spend daylight hours hidden in burrows, under logs, or within leaf litter.
- Defensive: This species is known for being skittish and defensive; they are more likely to use their large pincers to strike than their tail to sting.
- Solitary: They are generally territorial and solitary, though some keepers house them in pairs with caution in large enclosures.
Care and Husbandry (2026 Guidelines)
- Enclosure: A standard 10-gallon tank (approx. 50x25x30 cm) is the minimum for one adult.
- Environment:
- Temperature: Maintain a range between 24°C and 30°C (75–86°F).
- Humidity: Requires high humidity of 70–90%. Use a moisture-retaining substrate like coco fiber or peat moss at least 10–15 cm deep to allow for burrowing.
- Diet: Feed 1–2 times per week on live insects such as crickets, locusts, or roaches.
- Lifespan: In captivity, they typically live 7–10 years.
