Aspinochilus rufus (formerly known as Phormingochilus sp. "rufus") is a recently described species of tarantula in the subfamily Ornithoctoninae. Known commonly as the Peach Earth Tiger or Java Tree Tiger, it is native to the primary montane rainforests of Mount Argopuro in East Java, Indonesia.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: It is highly sought after for its distinctive reddish-brown to peach coloration.
- Size: Adult females reach a leg span of approximately 12–15 cm.
- Behaviour: They are arboreal (tree-dwelling) but exhibit opportunistic burrowing behaviour, especially as juveniles. They are known to be fast, skittish, and defensive if provoked.
- Taxonomy: The species was formally moved to the new genus Aspinochilus in 2024. It is distinguished from similar genera like Cyriopagopus by having minimal spines on its legs and a specific reproductive organ structure.

Habitat and Care
In the wild, these spiders inhabit high-altitude forests around 900–2,900 feet. In captivity, they require specific conditions to thrive:
- Enclosure: A vertical arboreal setup with 10–12 cm of moist substrate for burrowing and vertical cork bark for retreats.
- Environment: They are moisture-dependent, requiring humidity between 70–85% and temperatures around 24–28°C.
- Diet: Carnivorous, feeding on live insects such as crickets and roaches.
- Safety: They possess medically significant venom typical of "Old World" tarantulas and lack urticating hairs, meaning they rely on speed and biting for defense. Handling is strictly discouraged.
