The Blue Papua Mantis (Hierodula sp. Papua, likely to be reclassified as Pseudomantis papua) is a large, popular species in the pet trade, native to Papua New Guinea and Borneo. While many individuals are green, a blue coloration is a sought-after, though uncommon, color morph.

Characteristics

  • Size: Females typically grow larger (9-12 cm or 3.5-4.7 inches) than males (8-9 cm or 3.1-3.5 inches).
  • Coloration: Color varies from green to yellow-green, brown, or blue, often depending on environmental factors like humidity during molting. The blue color is rare in captivity.
  • Temperament: They are known for being active, confident hunters and are generally considered docile and easy to handle, making them suitable for beginners.
  • Diet: They have voracious appetites and will actively hunt prey up to half their size.

Care Tips

The Blue Papua Mantis is a hardy and easy-to-care-for species.

  • Enclosure: A vertically oriented enclosure is necessary to allow ample space for safe molting, at least three times the mantis's length in height. Provide vertical twigs or foliage for climbing and a mesh top for hanging.
  • Temperature: Maintain a temperature range of 20–26°C (68–79°F), though they can tolerate a wider range of 18–30°C (64–86°F). A slight temperature drop at night is acceptable.
  • Humidity: Humidity levels should be between 40% and 70%. Misting the enclosure two to three times a week is generally sufficient.
  • Feeding:
    • Nymphs (L1-L2): Can be fed fruit flies.
    • Older Nymphs/Adults: Readily eat various live foods like green bottle flies, and cockroaches.
    • Frequency: Feed when the abdomen is not overly round; wait for it to thin out again before feeding to avoid overfeeding and a shortened lifespan.

Scientific Clarification

The taxonomy of the Hierodula genus is currently under revision. There is a possibility that the species commonly known as Hierodula sp. Papua in the pet trade may actually belong to the genus Pseudomantis, a change that was suggested in a recent taxonomic review
