Stromatopelma calceatum, known as the Featherleg Baboon Tarantula, is an Old World arboreal species native to West Africa, ranging from Guinea and Ghana to Cameroon. It is widely considered one of the most challenging tarantulas to keep due to its speed, defensive nature, and potent venom.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: They reach a diagonal leg span of 5–6 inches (13–15 cm).
  • Appearance: They feature a pale tan to light brown body with mottled dark markings and distinct "feather-like" banding on the legs.
  • Lifespan: Females can live 12–15 years, while males typically live only 3–4 years

Behavior and Temperament

  • Defensiveness: This species is notoriously skittish and aggressive. It is known for "teleporting" speed and will not hesitate to deliver a medically significant bite if disturbed.
  • Venom: The bite is exceptionally painful, potentially causing severe muscle cramping, nausea, sweating, and intense swelling for weeks or months.
  • Habitat: In the wild, they are typically found in the canopy tops of palm trees or tropical forests, where their cryptic patterns provide camouflage.

Captivity Care

Due to its speed and temperament, this species is recommended only for advanced or expert keepers

  • Enclosure: A tall, arboreal vivarium is required. Provide vertical structures like hollow cork bark or bamboo for them to build asymmetrical tubular webs.
  • Climate: Maintain temperatures between 23–27°C (73–81°F) and high humidity of 70–80%.
  • Ventilation: Excellent cross-ventilation is critical to prevent stagnant air and mold growth in high-humidity setups.
  • Diet: Standard insect prey such as crickets, roaches, and locusts.
