Kochiana brunnipes, commonly known as the Dwarf Pink Leg Tarantula, is a monotypic genus of dwarf tarantula endemic to Brazil. It is a popular choice in the exotic pet hobby due to its striking coloration and manageable size.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: A true dwarf species, adults typically reach a leg span of only 5–6 cm (approximately 2–2.5 inches).
- Coloration: They feature a dark, often black cephalothorax and abdomen, contrasted by reddish-pink or orange-tinted legs (specifically the patellae, tibiae, and tarsi).
- Lifespan: Females can live for 6 to 10 years, while males have a much shorter lifespan of approximately 2 to 3 years.
Behaviour and Temperament
- Lifestyle: They are fossorial (burrowing) spiders that spend much of their time in silk-lined tunnels.
- Temperament: Generally docile but skittish; they are more likely to retreat into their burrows than show aggression, though they may occasionally display a threat pose if significantly disturbed.
- Activity: Primarily nocturnal, though they are often seen waiting at the mouth of their burrows for prey.
