Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Mature specimens develop intense metallic purple to violet hues across their entire body and legs. As spiderlings (slings), they are often blue and are described as robust "units" with excellent appetites.
  • Size: This is a large species, capable of reaching a massive diagonal leg span of 18–20 cm (7–8.5 inches).
  • Temperament: Generally considered bold and skittish rather than outright aggressive. They have a vicious feeding response and will often "pounce" on prey immediately. Like most New World species, they possess urticating hairs which they may flick if threatened.
  • Growth Rate: They have a medium to fast growth rate. Owners often note they grow steadily as slings but may slow down slightly as they approach maturity.

Care and Keeping

  • Experience Level: Often recommended for keepers with some experience who enjoy a "spicier" tarantula, though their hardiness makes them accessible to determined beginners.
  • Environment: As a terrestrial opportunistic burrower, they require an enclosure with ample floor space and deep substrate for digging.
  • Temperature: They thrive in warm conditions, typically between 24°C and 29°C (75°F–85°F).
