Cheloctonus intermedia, commonly known as the Dark Creeper Scorpion, is a medium-sized scorpion native to the eastern regions of Southern Africa. It is highly regarded by hobbyists for its striking pitch-black colouration and the unique "granulation" patterns on its large pincers.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Typically solid black, though they can appear brownish if covered in mud or dirt from their environment.
  • Size: They generally grow to about 3 inches (approx. 7.5 cm) in length.
  • Behaviour: This is a burrowing species that also lives under rocks in open grasslands and savannahs. They are primarily active at night.
  • Venom: Like most members of the Hormuridae family, they are not considered medically significant to humans, though they are still venomous like all scorpions.

Natural Habitat

The species is found across the eastern side of South Africa (specifically Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal), as well as in eSwatini and southern Mozambique
