Grammostola pulchripes, commonly known as the Chaco Golden Knee, is a large terrestrial tarantula native to the grasslands of Argentina and Paraguay. It is highly regarded in the pet trade as one of the best species for beginners due to its docile nature, hardiness, and impressive appearance.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: Characterised by its dark body covered in long, light-coloured hairs and distinct golden-yellow stripes on its "knees" (the joints of its legs).
  • Size: One of the larger Grammostola species, reaching an adult leg span of 17–22 cm (approx. 7–8 inches).
  • Lifespan: Females are long-lived, often reaching 20–25 years (sometimes up to 40), while males typically live for 5–10 years.
  • Temperament: Generally calm and slow-moving, though they may occasionally be skittish or flick urticating hairs if threatened.

Care and Habitat

As a terrestrial species, they require an enclosure that prioritises floor space over height to prevent injury from falls.

  • Enclosure: A 10–20 gallon tank or a terrestrial-specific enclosure is suitable for adults.
  • Substrate: Provide 4–6 inches of substrate (like coco fiber or peat moss) for burrowing.
  • Environment:
    • Temperature: Ideally 21–27°C (70–80°F).
    • Humidity60–70%. While they are relatively hardy, they benefit from a shallow water dish to maintain humidity levels.
  • Diet: Opportunistic feeders that consume crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized insects.
