Tapinauchenius rasti, commonly known as the Caribbean Diamond, is a fast-moving, arboreal tarantula endemic to Union Island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Formally described in 2018, it was previously known in the hobby as Tapinauchenius sp. 'Caribbean Diamond' or 'Union Island'.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Adults feature a velvety dark base colour with shimmering metallic tones of purple, green-gold, and bronze.
- Size: A mid-sized species with an adult leg span typically between 10 cm and 14 cm (4–5 inches).
- Lifespan: Females can live for 15+ years, while males typically live only 3–4 years.
- Temperament: Known for being extremely fast and skittish. Like other members of its genus, it lacks urticating hairs and prefers to flee rather than act defensively.
Care and Husbandry
Due to its lightning-fast speed and specific environmental needs, it is generally recommended for intermediate to advanced keepers.
- Enclosure: Requires a tall, arboreal setup with vertical cork bark and plenty of foliage for retreats.
- Environment: Thrives at temperatures between 24–28°C and high humidity levels of 70–90%.
- Diet: They have a strong feeding response and readily accept crickets, roaches, and other appropriately sized invertebrates.
