The Acanthoscurria geniculata, commonly known as the Brazilian Giant White Knee, is a popular terrestrial tarantula favored in the UK for its striking black-and-white leg bands and impressive adult size.

 

Species Profile

  • Size: One of the larger "New World" species, reaching a leg span of 18–22cm (7–8+ inches).
  • Growth Rate: Known for a very fast growth rate, often reaching significant size within 2–3 years.
  • Temperament: Generally considered bold and voracious. While not typically aggressive, they have a heavy feeding response and may kick urticating hairs if threatened.
  • Display Value: They are highly active and rarely hide, making them excellent display animals. 

 

Care Requirements

  • Enclosure: Minimum size of 45 x 45 x 30cm for adults, with deep substrate for burrowing (approx. 10–15cm).
  • Temperature: Prefers 22–26°C (71–78°F).
  • Humidity: Requires high humidity of 70–80%, achieved through regular misting and a shallow water dish.
  • Diet: Extremely opportunistic; they will eat crickets, roaches, locusts, and mealworms.
