Phidippus audax, commonly known as the Bold Jumping Spider or Daring Jumping Spider, is one of the most widespread and recognizable jumping spiders in North America. It is famous for its striking "metallic" fangs and curious, almost dog-like personality.

Distinctive Features

  • Iridescent Chelicerae: Their mouthparts (jaws) are a brilliant, metallic iridescent green or blue, which makes them stand out against their dark bodies.
  • Abdominal Pattern: They typically have a velvet-black body with a prominent white, yellow, or orange triangular spot in the centre of the abdomen, flanked by two smaller spots.
  • Size: Adults generally measure between 6 mm and 19 mm (roughly 0.25 to 0.75 inches). Females are noticeably larger and stockier than males.
  • Juvenile Colours: Young spiders often have bright orange or red spots that typically turn white as they reach maturity.

Behaviour & Habitat

  • Expert Hunters: They are diurnal (active during the day) and do not build webs to catch food. Instead, they use their incredible stereoscopic vision to stalk prey before pouncing from several times their body length away.
  • "Bold" Nature: True to their name, they are inquisitive and less likely to flee immediately when they encounter humans, often tilting their heads to observe onlookers.
  • Range: They are native to North America (Canada, USA, and Mexico) but have been introduced to other regions like Hawaii and parts of Europe.

Keeping as a Pet

  • Ease of Care: Considered an excellent "beginner" spider, they are hardy and adapt well to captivity.
  • Housing: They require a tall, arboreal enclosure with good cross-ventilation. A front-opening tank is preferred so you don't destroy their silk "hammocks" (retreats) when opening the lid.
  • Diet: They eat a variety of live insects, such as fruit flies for spiderlings and crickets, houseflies, or small roaches for adults.
  • Environment: They thrive at room temperatures (21–28°C) and moderate humidity. A light misting on one side of the tank every few days provides necessary drinking water.
