Chaerilus celebensis, commonly known as the Asian Bush Scorpion or Speckled Bush Scorpion, is a small, terrestrial scorpion belonging to the family Chaerilidae. It is recognized for its stocky build and reclusive nature. 

 

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: A "tiny" species, with adults rarely exceeding 3.8 cm (1.5 inches) in total length.
  • Coloration: Typically reddish-yellow to yellowish-brown with intense, variegated blackish-brown spots across the carapace and metasoma.
  • Identification: Features include a stocky build, smooth or weakly granulated tergites, and a moderately flattened chela (hand). 

 

Behaviour and Venom

  • Temperament: Generally docile and reclusive; they rarely sting and may exhibit a threat pose or play dead when disturbed.
  • Venom: Considered of little to no medical significance to humans.
  • Habits: Terrestrial forest dwellers that burrow into soil and leaf mulch. They forage on low vegetation but are incapable of climbing vertical smooth surfaces.

  • Experience Level: Suitable for beginners due to their small size and ease of care.
  • Environment:
    • Temperature: Thrives between 24°C and 28°C (75–82°F).
    • Humidity: Requires high humidity, typically 70% to 80%.
  • Setup: Needs a terrestrial enclosure with a deep soil/mulch substrate (for burrowing) and hiding places like bark or leaf litter.
  • Diet: Feeds on small insects such as micro-crickets or fruit flies.
