The Armadillo officinalis 'Greece' is a specific locality of the Hissing Isopod, known for its unique defensive mechanism of producing an audible sound when disturbed.

Key Characteristics

  • Appearance: This species is a large, dark grey to brown pill bug with a typical glossy, rounded shape, capable of rolling into a near-perfect sphere (conglobation). The 'Greece' locale is part of the naturally occurring variations found across the Mediterranean.
  • Size: Adults can reach up to 2 cm (0.8 inches) in length.
  • Defense Sound: They are famous in the hobby for their ability to create a soft, cicada-like hissing or rattling noise when startled or handled. This sound is produced by rapidly rubbing their legs against the inside of their exoskeleton while rolled up. When a large group hisses at once, the sound can be surprisingly noticeable.
  • Lifespan: This is a slow-growing species, but it is one of the longest-living terrestrial isopods, potentially living for up to 9 years.

Habitat and Care

The 'Greece' locale, like other A. officinalis, originates from the warm, dry Mediterranean region and prefers conditions that are slightly different from typical tropical isopods.

  • Enclosure: They require good cross-ventilation and a pronounced moisture gradient, with a damp area (using sphagnum moss) and a significantly drier area covered only with leaf litter. This prevents issues with molting which can occur in overly humid environments.
  • Temperature & Humidity: They thrive in ambient temperatures of 18–24°C (64–75°F) with a humidity range of 60–75%.
  • Diet: They are detritivores and their diet should primarily consist of decaying leaf litter and rotting white wood.
    • Supplement their diet regularly with protein (like fish flakes or dried shrimp) and a consistent source of calcium (such as cuttlebone or eggshells) to ensure healthy growth and strong exoskeletons.
  • Breeding: They are a slow-growing species and may take about nine months to reach maturity. They breed well in captivity once established, especially when provided with adequate space and the right environmental conditions.

These fascinating and hardy isopods make an excellent addition to a clean-up crew in semi-arid bioactive enclosures, or as a unique display pet.
