Parapachymorpha zomproi, commonly known as Zompro’s Stick Insect or the Thai Beauty Stick Insect, is a species of stick insect native to the forests of Thailand. It is a popular choice for beginners due to its calm nature and ease of care.
Physical Characteristics
- Size: Females are significantly larger, reaching up to 9–10 cm (3.5–4 inches) in length, while males are smaller and more slender, reaching about 6–7 cm.
- Appearance: Females have a rough, bark-like texture with spikes on their body and legs. Males are smooth, slender, and lack these spikes.
- Coloration: Typically shades of brown, beige, or grey to mimic twigs or bark.
- Wings: This species is wingless (apterous) and cannot fly.
Behaviour and Life Cycle
- Activity: They are nocturnal, remaining motionless during the day and becoming active at night to feed.
- Defense: When threatened, they may feign death (thanatosis) by dropping to the ground and remaining still, or they may shed a limb to escape, which can be regrown during future moults.
- Reproduction: They can reproduce sexually or via parthenogenesis, where females lay unhatched eggs that produce female clones.
- Lifespan: Their typical lifespan is approximately 10 to 12 months.
Care as a Pet
- Diet: They primarily feed on the leaves of bramble (blackberry), rose, or ivy.
- Environment: They require a humid environment (achieved through daily misting) and a vertical enclosure that is at least three times the length of the insect to allow for safe moulting.
