Aeluropoda insignis, commonly known as the Flat Horned Hissing Cockroach, is a species of large, flightless cockroach native to south-central Madagascar. A member of the tribe Gromphadorhini, it is closely related to the well-known Madagascar Hissing Cockroach but is distinguished by its significantly flatter body profile and reddish-brown to black coloration. 
 
Key Characteristics
Size: Males typically reach approximately 5–7.5 cm (2–3 inches), while females are generally slightly smaller and more slender, around 4.5–5 cm.
Sound: Like its relatives, it produces a distinct "hissing" sound by forcefully expelling air through its abdominal spiracles. These hisses are used for defence, mating rituals, and social signalling.
Behaviour: They are more active and faster than many other hissing roach species. The nymphs are particularly agile and prone to escaping if enclosures are not properly secured.
Lifespan: In captivity, they typically live between 3 and 5 years. 
 
Captive Care
Because of their striking appearance and relatively docile nature, they are popular in the exotic pet hobby. 
Diet: They are generalist detritivores. Recommended foods include fresh fruits (apples, bananas), vegetables (carrots, squash), and high-protein dry foods like roach chow or cat food.
Environment: They require a temperature range of 25°C–28°C. While they need access to moisture (typically through a damp section of substrate or fresh food), they do not thrive in overly high humidity, which can lead to health issues.
Housing: Enclosures should provide vertical and horizontal climbing surfaces, such as cork bark or egg crates. A climbing barrier like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is often necessary at the top of the tank, as both adults and nymphs are adept climbers.
