Cyriocosmus leetzi, commonly known as the Colombian Dwarf Tiger or Venezuelan Dwarf Beauty, is a small, colorful tarantula species native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia. It is popular in the exotic pet hobby for its striking patterns and relatively docile nature.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Features a reddish-brown to orange carapace with a black triangular mark. Its abdomen is reddish-orange with eight black tiger-like stripes radiating from the centre.
- Size: A true dwarf species, reaching a maximum diagonal leg span of approximately 4–5cm (1.5–2 inches).
- Lifespan: Females typically live for 5 to 7 years, while males have a shorter lifespan of 2 to 3 years.
- Temperament: Generally described as docile and skittish rather than aggressive. They tend to bolt to their burrows when startled instead of showing defensive postures.
Care and Habitat
- Enclosure: Terrestrial setup with at least 7–10cm (3–4 inches) of substrate to allow for burrowing.
- Temperature: Ideal range is 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F).
- Humidity: Requires high humidity, roughly 70–80%. This can be maintained by lightly misting or keeping part of the substrate damp.
- Diet: Enthusiastic eaters that will tackle prey nearly their own size, such as fruit flies (for slings), small crickets, or roaches.
