The world’s largest millipede species
• Gentle
• Long‑lived
• Perfect for beginner and experienced keepers
The Giant African Millipede (Archispirostreptus gigas) is a true icon of the invertebrate hobby. Native to the warm, humid forests of East Africa, these impressive detritivores can reach lengths of up to 33.5 cm and grow nearly 7 cm thick, making them one of the most striking yet peaceful exotic pets available.
Despite their size, they are calm, slow-moving, and completely non‑venomous — ideal for keepers who enjoy observing natural behaviours, maintaining bioactive setups, or simply appreciating a gentle giant.
✨ Fascinating Features
Hundreds of legs, not thousands: Adults typically have 256–400 legs, gaining more with each moult as they grow.
Natural cleaning crew: They often host harmless symbiotic mites that help keep their exoskeleton clean.
Armoured defence: When startled, they curl into a tight spiral. If further threatened, they may release a harmless but pungent benzoquinone fluid that can temporarily stain skin.
🌿 Care & Husbandry
Diet: A deep, nutritious substrate is essential — decaying hardwood leaves (oak/beech), white‑rot wood, and a constant calcium source such as cuttlebone. Soft vegetables like cucumber can be offered as occasional supplements.
Environment:
Temperature: 20–25°C
Humidity: 70–80%
Substrate depth: 15 cm minimum for burrowing and safe moulting Their calm temperament and hardy nature make them a favourite for bioactive enclosures.
Lifespan: With proper care, these millipedes can live 7–10 years, making them a rewarding long‑term companion.
